[Resolved]  Airtel — Over Billing

This is regarding my husband’s Airtel Connection[protected] based out of Mumbai. I have been writing to Bharti Airtel since Nov. 2008 on the issue of faulty / over-billing but till date have received no satisfactory response from them. Instead the cell phone services have been suspended twice with no prior intimation and the matter is still under dispute. Here is a history of the events that prompted us to write in to the Consumer Complaints Forum.

My husband traveled to Dubai & Sharjah end of Oct.2008 on a 5-day trip. On his return, he realized that his outgoing calls and messaging had been barred. Thereafter, he received a SMS from Airtel stating that he had an outstanding of Rs.18, 000 on his connection, which had to be settled immediately, else they would not restore his connection. We spoke to their customer care executives but received very little assistance. The services to our line remained suspended for almost 2 weeks.

We then wrote to Airtel on Nov.12th saying that we needed a detailed itemized bill before paying the dues since it was not a small amount by any stretch of imagination. On Nov.17th w spoke to Ms.Abhilasha Hans, Head – Customer Services stationed at their Corporate Office in Gurgaon. We receive a statement only on Nov.30th indicating the dues, but no details of the phone numbers called and received and the usage time were disclosed. Their excuse was that the Billing System did not permit a detailed invoice before the due date of our billing cycle.

On reviewing this statement we discovered some discrepancies and were not clear about some of the charges levied on to us. The International roaming charges that they had billed us viz a viz what was mentioned on their internet site were different. They were over-charging us by a substantial amount. We then wrote back to Airtel on Dec.8th for clarification on the same. We asked them for documentary proof from Iteselat (their co-service provider in the UAE) to substantiate their claim. Since we did not hear from them we sent a reminder on Dec.14th along with a protest payment of Rs.8, 000. We received a reply on Dec.15th but it did not address all our queries and provide us with necessary clarification on critical issues.

The next bill was received shortly which included dues from the earlier bill. Here again we discovered some mistakes amounting to over-billing which we conveyed over email to Airtel on Jan.1st 2009 along with a reminder to revert on the earlier bill issue. They acknowledged the ‘wrong’ charges made by them, over phone. Subsequently, we made our payment towards this bill after making adjustments for the faulty charges levied.

On Jan. 4th, we sent a detailed email to Ms.Abhilasha Hans voicing our disappointment in Airtel’s response to our grievance. We insisted that they send us the proof we had requested if the dues need to be settled. Ever since, there has been exchange of emails and phone calls between the Nodal Office and us, but nothing concrete has come of it and we still have not sought the desired clarification on this matter from Airtel. We have not heard from any senior Airtel official despite addressing and marking a copy of each mail to Ms.Hans. And as of Jan.27th they have barred all the outgoing services to our number, which compelled us to seek the services of another service-provider.

When I browse through this on-line forum, I realize that there are a lot of aggrieved Airtel customers like us, seeking justice on various service-related matters. This can further be affirmed by an article that appeared in Hindustan Times dated Jan.30th 2009 wherein Airtel has been voted as the ‘Worst Service Provider’ in the telecom sector by the Consumer Guidance Society of India based on complaints filed by consumers in the areas of over-billing, cross-connections, unreachable helplines and network problems.

Bharti Airtel — Faulty bill

Sir,

I have received my airtel mobile bill for No [protected], dated 25th Aug 2010, for Rs 9900/-.
For which I have not made the calls. I am a customer of Airtel from last 3yrs and I have been paying my bills on time. Till date my bill has not gone beyond Rs. 350/- except for 1 month when it was about Rs. 1100/-. Company has fixed a maximum limit of Rs. 4200/- for my mobile phone. so that all my out going calls to be stoped on crossing the limit, but I was not informed for the same. on 12 Aug. 2010 I came to know that my non bill amount has reached above Rs 6600/- (By Dailling 121) I had no such calls from my phone, I raned up the customer care to stop the out going calls Vide request No 33547807. but no action was taken I had asked for the bill and it was told that only after 25 Aug 2010 only my bill will be generated. But no action was taken to stop the out going calls and to check the problem why my bill has reached above Rs 6600/-. But when I received my bill I was surprissed to see that it was above Rs. 9900/-. I have given a mail to Nodal Officer and till date could not get a satisfactory reply from him . I have been receiving a seperate statement from him that the calls were made local for Rs 7312/- and next time it is for Bid2win, I have not received any reply why my out going calls where not stopped and informed when it had reached the maximum limit of Rs. 4200/- as fixed by there own company.and that too for the calls not made by me they are not trying to locate the actuall problem is . I havebeen receving calls from the customer care now and then to clear the bill (for the calls not made by me) daily giving me a tension, There is no postive reply from the company till date. They are also calling up my parents residence and harassing them (my parents are above 82Yr of age).

Pls look into the matter and get it solve the billing for no calls made from my side at the earliest.

Bharti Airtel — overbilling and late fee charged every month

I got my Bhartiairtel broad band services in the month of May 2010.I used to pay the bill amount atleast one day earlier than the due date. The bill for the month of August was paid by me by cheque and dropped in the drop box prvided by the collection centre at Bharathiar Road,Gandhipuram..The cheque was honoured but the company says it has not received the amount and without informing me disconnected my broad band service.I showed the ATM slip indicating the amount was debited to my bank account and the services were resumed immediately but every month on 28 th date they used to disconncet the service and the bill is inflated by Rs 75 towards LATE FEE.The LATE FEE is invariably charged and added to the bill every month from the month of August 2010 onwards. All these indicates that the BHARTIARTEL is interested in collecting LATE FEE from gullible customers like me

The bill amount for the month of August was either siphoned off by the staff or not accounted to me.They are harrassing me every month by disconnecting the service torturing me by sending collecting agents as if I have not paid the bill. From September onwards I am issuing cheques one day in advance and obtaining the receipts from the collecting agents but invariably the bill includes LATE FEE of RS 75

What a way to collect excess money from the customer's.Thy name is not service but fraud

kriselvasn
I fully agree with what you have to say.

In our case, my husband travelled to Thailand for 2-3 days on an official trip during Dec 2010. He was having his Airtel mobile connection with him, which was initially not working on International roam. However, upon placing a request for activation of International Roaming facility on the said number, we were informed that the International Roaming GPRS charges are very high, and hence it was suggested by the customer care executive that we should not opt for the same. Thus we opted NOT to have the GPRS activated while on international roaming.

However, when we received the monthly bill for December 2010, we were shocked to see a charge of Rs.7, 337.63 plus taxes on account of GPRS charges while on International Roaming.

After calling the customer care and writing numerous emails to the nodal officer, we were told that "we have been charged in our invoice dated 10/01/2011 as per the International Roaming usage" Strange, considering the fact that we never wanted to use the GPRS facility while on International Roaming, and hence placed a request for deactivating the same while on International Roaming. We were informed that "while in International Roaming, if the handset is Blackberry/ IPhone, it will frequently ping to get connected to internet and hence, the GPRS charges will be applicable according to the Visiting Operator, irrespective of mails sent/received."

In the subsequent email, the Nodal officer stated that they may process a reversal of Rs. 2000/- on our number.

As of now, the above matter is still pending.

Airtel — No prior intimation for deactivation of internet plan on mobile

I was using a 6-month Internet plan under which I was allowed to use 2 GB every
month in just Rs 300.

On last 6th of Feb, when my bill was generated I was charged Rs 4637 for using
Internet. I was really shocked by seeing the bill amount. I called the customer
care executive for the clarification of the same and was told that my Plan was
over on 25th of Jan and uses of Internet after that period will be charged at
30 paisa /50 kb.

I was given no prior notification for the switching of this scheme to such an
Expensive one. I am completely unable to pay this amount on any condition.

When i called up to the Nodal Office, they said that sometimes system doesn't send any notification to the customer. Customer should call to the airtel to know when his plan is going to deactivate. But i think this is not the valid reason.
One more thing, in the Post paid, customer gets daily alert regarding his unbilled amount (excluding of all discount) but there is no option for postpaid customer to know the exact billed amount unless bill is not generated.

Please advice what to do next?

Airtel — mobile disconnection and overcharging in name of vas not subscribed

my phone No was disconnected without any notice. i have already submitted my complete documents of Mobile No [protected]. I was often charged for Vas services not subscribed by me. my current phone no is [protected] and email id is [protected]@gmail.com. my landline no is [protected]

AirTel — Faulty Bill

Airtel has charged me for those calls and SMS that I have never done.

1) I have sent 1 message and I am charged for 7-8 times for the same message
2) My GPRS service got enabled without my permission. I never requested airtel to activate the services. And they have charged me 110 rupees for last month. I got know about it when I received the bill.
3) I have raised the issue with airtel but no body is responding. Even when I am trying to call customer care no body picks up the call.

Airtel — Charging without any intimation

Today 17/03/2011 airtel services charged me 99 rs for just cliking add not even asking for the subscription so i called them but they r telling that we cant give money back its ur fault. so what i do

AirTel — BILL FAULTY

GPRS USAGE CALCULATED AS PER EACH DAY DATA LIMIT BUT ACTIVATED 98 RS PACK FOR 30 DAYS WITH LIMIT UP TO 2 GB. BILL WAS GENERATED AFTER 2 DAYS OF GPRS ACTIVATION & BASED ON PER DAY LIMIT CHARGED 5000 RS FOR CROSSING PER DAY LIMIT OF 69MB. THIS KIND OF BILLING & PER DAY LIMIT WAS NOT AT ALL COMMUNICATED BY CUSTOMER CARE AND IS NOT WRITTEN ANY WHERE.

NOT IN A POSITION TO PAY SO MUCH MONTHLY BILL.

Airtel — Overbilling without taking consent for extra services

Hi I have complaint against Airtel Broadband services. I have taken limited download internet services from airtel and used to pay Rs 660 including Tax to Airtel. But this time I received a Bill of Rs 2398. On enquiring they showed me that i have crossed my monthly download limit and so I have to pay extra fees.
My complain is that Airtel is duty bound to alert the customer , once customer exceeds their monthly plan. They have overcharged me without taking my prior consent about their services. They should inform their customer once download limit is expired and take his consent for extra billing. My airtel account No is[protected].

Could you please file a complain regarding this and waive out my extra charges as I was not informed of the same and my prior consent is not taken for the service being offered.
Thanks
Subodh
i am also agree with this complaint today while browring on net using gprs i get one message that says thanks for downloadd game you charged rs 99 but i am not visited any game site this is the third time having the same problem how can i stop this nonsense

Bharti Airtel — Non activation of Desired Bill Plan, providing incorrect information and poor customer service after charging for it

There are three issues-

1. Not activating desired bill plan after agreeing for same and providing wrong information to retain client.

I am an Airtel customer since 2005 for almost 7 years now, was prepaid user till mid 2010 then a postpaid user. I applied for number portability in last week April 2011 and within a day received call from executive asking me reasons for portability.I explained him the issue which was bill amount, monthly bill during my tenure as post paid customer were far in excess of prepaid amount for the months and also way beyond my expectation. The bill plan which i was having was TURBO 299 at that time but then executive gave me lucrative plan WIN 149 with two months of rental waiver and i asked him to activate the same. But that plan was never activated for my number. I am still shocked that the bills which i received for last month was also based on TURBO 299, even though i have been talking to executive's all these days either orally or via mail describing that bill should be based on WIN 149 plan. So the correctly processed bill has never been provided to me after repeatedly asking for them.

2. Poor Customer Care Service

Daily, I am receiving call from your bill collection department asking me to make payment of outstanding amount. I don't why they just call me and ask to make payment without even reading the feedback given by me when last call from their department was made to me and when i had explained all the issues.

3. Poor Service for which i am being charged Rs. 15 per month
I restarted MISSED CALL Alert service, but after regularly making complaints, i am still not receiving alerts. When ever I am making a complaint, next day I receive all the alters but then again problem restarts. At times, i notice that when within day, when i had many missed call, I receive alerts only for few of them.

4. Discontinuation of Service-
My outgoing service has been discontinued without proper bill being issued to me and without any intimation.

Hope complaints are properly detailed

Airtel Mobile — Wrong Billing for internet usages, causing thousands in difference

Since i activated 2 months of FREE internet usage for new NOKIA N8 3G from Airtel Mobile, i used internet until i received SMS notification from Airtel that my offer expired. As per the SMS notification, the expiry was on 14th Sep 2011 5:18 PM. However, in the bill, only until 12th Sep 2011 is being considered FREE and the rest of the usages are being billed. Due to this the bill amount is being offset by thousands.

I've contacted customer care several times and physically presented myself with SMS proof at Airtel Santhome office, Chennai. Still, the resolved is being shifted from one support executive to another and the billing section keeps calling me for payment, which was supposed to be FREE.

As a customer, i don't wish to be held responsible for false/wrong SMS notifications from Airtel. Please resolve my billing problem. The proof and more information are available at the below links.

AIRTEL MUST PAY ME FOR AN YEAR FOR INCORRECT BILLING

Bharti Airtel — Change of Call rates & charging without any prior intimation to customer

Airtel has changed my calling plan without prior intimation to me & now they have started charging me Rs.1/day for lower calls rate. Some days ago they have activated a scheme without prior intimation for which they started deducting Rs.5/day in both the cases i lost around Rs. 200.00. even when i called to their customer care center they replied that it is system activated. Why don't they take confirmation from customers?

Bharti Airtel — Excessive Bill / Faulty Billing

Myself, Ravi Maheshwary, am the holder of an Airtel postpaid sim card. On 21st December 2011, I had called up Airtel to start the Rs. 98 DATA PLAN which gives 1GB of Internet Data Usage. Instead of starting this plan, I by mistake requested for a wrong plan for 10paise/10 Kb by sending a wrong SMS. I immediately called Airtel up and told them that I have requested the wrong plan by mistake. They said that they will start the correct plan. Within some time, I got an SMS that the wrong plan (10p/10Kb) has been deactivated and the one I had requested for (1GB/Rs. 98) has been activated.

After a month, I called up Airtel and told them to deactivate the plan (1 GB/Rs. 98). They told me that such a plan was NEVER activated for my number in the first place. It took me a while to understand after that bill came, that they didn't activate the plan I had asked for. Rather, they activated another plan - 10paise/10 Kb, which cost me in excess of Rs. 1996.50.

Now Airtel is calling up daily and harassing me to pay up the bill. When complained, they said that the fault is from my end. However, I requested Airtel to check all their recorded conversations but still they're not owing up to their mistake. I would request you to kindly help me in the matter.

Agree more than 100%. All the service providers are crook and unethical. Else how do you explain not just the above but vague paid special services getting activated on your phone. IN most of the cases you would not even reaslise that you are paying for some services which you never subscribed to in the first place. The tragedy is that the worst sufferers at the hand of mobile service providers and the worst culprit being Airtel are poor people who cannot read or write. Millions of rikshawallas, vendors, daily wagers are at the receiving end of this fraud perpetrated on a daily basis wherein services are activated on their phones be it some ring tone, news, some game, chat etc.

The other day a cricket game got activated on one of my phones and I got charged Rs 99. Just yesterday some chat @ Rs 1.50 per day was activated, a few days ago a daily cricket update got activated on my MILs phone at Rs 5 per day. The worst part is that these gets done wither by Airtel activating and sending a SMS stating "If you DO NO want it then reply". It should be the opposite. They should send a message giving the details of the service and ask whether the consumer wants it or not. The service should not get activated without the consumer saying Yes.

In other cases Airtel will randomly pick up nos and activate the service and when you check they will inform that it got activated on the net!!! They will never tell you who activated it because the fraud is committed by Airtel itself.

Overbilling is the worst menace at Airtel. I am sitting on a Rs 20000 bill which I have complained atleast 100 times to all and sundry in Airtel. I witheld that bill and paid the subsequent bill 100%. Today my calls have been barred and I am sitting here andicapped. I will raise it with Sanjay Kapoor or Abhilasha ones but more likely than not the solution is to taken them to the consumer court and fight a long battle.

Airtel doesn't care a damn about who the customer is. For them Customer is not the King but a helpless pawn they can play around with and harass any day and every day for their ulterior motives and pleasure.
I have activated a 2G unlimited data plan
