Hon’ble sir,
This letter is being addressed to you as a matter of last resort and after exhausting almost all the remedies which we, the residents of gandhi nagar, east delhi, can think of.
We have been told that the executives organ of the government understands the concerns of the citizens and does everything possible to redress those concerns. Hence, with this hope and request, we have knocked your door.
Hon’ble sir,
We are the residents of gandhi nagar, a locality in the national capital territory of delhi, pray to you for guaranteeing us the basic minimum need for survival and the life of dignity.
“gandhi nagar, which holds the tag of being the asia’s biggest readymade garments/textile market, will also be known for its pitiful condition of the roads and sanitation, if the conditions are not improved.”
Gandhi nagar is a region within the capital, yet miles away from it. It is a region where the concept development is yet to unfolds itself and where the policy of swatchh bharat is yet to arrive. The condition of this region can’t be expressed in words.
The government is determined to construct good all-weather road connectivity under the pradhan mantri gram sadak yojana, but it appears to have turn a blind eye to an area within the national capital. The condition of roads and streets in gandhi nagar is much more than pathetic. Not just during the monsoon season, but across the year, the roads and streets are filled with potholes. The menace is so prominent that road accidents (Minor and major both) are almost a regular thing.
The condition of roads and street was itself a very big issue; however, the recent strike of sanitation staff has added to the woes. Potholed streets, sludge and mud on the roads, large heaps of garbage, overflowing drains, litter and feces floating on streets makes a perfect combination to violate our right to live with dignity. It is no exaggeration to state that living in such conditions is akin to living in a war-prone area. The only difference is that in a war-prone area, we live in a fear of attack or ambush by the enemy, while in our area, it is the fear of attack or bite by any deadly mosquito or becoming a prey of any submerged pothole. Although our area comes within the territory of the national capital, we, as the residents of this locality, feel nothing less than living in a slum, or even worse.
Hon’ble sir,
It has been more than a week that the strike of sanitation workers has come to an end. However, for the residents of our colony, it does not look like. The situation is still as if the sanitation workers are not coming.
The star-program of the government - swachh bharat mission - seems to have forgotten about this locality in delhi. The heaps of garbage are visible on every corner of the road and the street is filled with drain water. Mosquitos seem to enjoy this environment and the residents lament on their plight. Diseases like dengue, malaria are standing on our door steps and we feel like helpless and powerless, in such a situation. A child residing next door is already suffering from dengue and there would be many more such cases of which we are not even aware.
Hon’ble sir,
It may appear that all this is an exaggeration to you and that all these strong words are an expression of my anger. A video on youtube titled ‘the reality of east delhi – swachh bharat’ (Link - https://youtu.be/lCB3IwF8Q5s) will bring the plight of the residents before your eyes. I would like to assert that the living conditions of this area is depleting with each day and each hour. The pathetic conditions of the roads and blocked drainage system coupled with the menace of mosquitoes can make any locality horrible, leave alone gandhi nagar, an area which has always been treated like an adopted son by the authorities.
Hon’ble sir,
I am addressing this letter with great hope and aspirations. Multiple requests have been raised with the local councilor, district authorities etc., but nothing to our avail. The major and the more prominent issue with respect to the problem of this area is the step-motherly treatment by the delhi government, by the municipal corporation, and by the elected councilors.
I understand that this change can’t be done in one day or by one stroke of a pen; but my prayer is, at least, issue some direction or guideline to the authorities so that some positive starts in the area. I have full faith that once the top administration starts taking the area seriously, the local councilors and residents will be more than willing to be part of this good cause.
Hence, i am once again raising this request to look into the plight of the residents of geeta gali, dharampura (Ward number 233 - shahadra south zone) and take suitable actions. It is my humble request to you, dear sir, to exercise your power and initiate some action in the interest of the area, in the interest of delhi and in the interest of the nation.
“one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Yours truly,
A concerned citizen of india and a resident of gandhi nagar.
