I & my sister recently checked in to "The Retreat Hotel & Convention Centre’ at Madh Island Marve Road, Mumbai (11th Oct’16).
We made an online booking for one night, but kept the option open for an extended stay, incase we had a good time off at the hotel premises.
What followed had us appalled, dejected, furious & stressed for the rest of our stay.
- ISSUE no. 1 - The online booking made on Booking.com clearly mentioned that we selected the Twin bed/ 2 Singles bed option. But, we were checked in to a room with a king size bed. We had to haggle with Mr. Roy, & support our concern with proof of mail that mentioned we had a booking for 2 single beds. WE DID THAT, & were moved to another room, thankfully.
- ISSUE no.2 - The second room we shifted to had no working phones, since the lines/ connection cables were rotten. After chasing the staff to yet again do something about this, we were proposed another room (hopefully with a working phone line)
BY THIS TIME, ON A ONE DAY HOLIDAY, WE HAD ALREADY WASTED A COUPLE OF HOURS SHIFTING 2 ROOMS - LUGGING OUR STUFF.
ISSUE no. 3 - We’d shifted to the third room now, which was now, not ready for a check in - No water bottles kept for the guest & guess what - THE TOILET FLUSH WAS NOT WORKING - For Every Single Flush we HAD TO MAKE a call to the front desk, requesting for the flush to work - which would then flush after the complain - 5 such annoying calls were made from our end so the flush could be treated -
BY NOW, IT WAS AROUND EVENING, & WE HAD LOST ALL PATIENCE & OUR TIME ONLY MAKING CALLS DEALING WITH PHONES AND TOILETS. NOT TO FORGET THE TV REMOTE THAT HAD SMALL INSECTS CRAWLING ON IT - BUT BY NOW WE HAD LOST ALL PATIENCE TO EVEN COMPLAIN ABOUT THE UNKEMPT ROOM
Here began the never ending negotiating phone calls with Mr. Roy, the manager & his senior Mr. Vijay Paware, who started proposing inane things that could make us feel better & compensate for the entire day we wasted at the hotel, dealing with issues that only talk about how mis-managed the hotel is, and how callously the managing staff deals with unhappy guests.
They offered us a 'free lunch' OR 'an extended stay till 6pm next day' OR 'a Rs.2000 discount on the first day room cost to cover for all the trouble we went through & ruining our entire stay.
It was only logical that we ask for a complimentary one day stay the next day as our so-called day was already ruined thanks to the mis-managed hotel. According to Mr. Vijay Paware & Mr. Roy this was "OUT OF QUESTION" as they will need to provide an explanation for the same to their auditors (not our problem).
This was obviously a long telephone conversation negotiating terms & finally denying us what we wanted & instead telling us very categorically to "CHECK OUT NOW before 6 to Avail the discount" or stay till 6pm with out the discount. The choice was ours.
This condescending and rude tone and behaviour made it simpler for us to decide to leave immediately & so we did. So, according to the staff, the Rs. 2000 discount made all my troubles go away! Wow!
We need compensation for all the nonsense we’ve gone through, not to mention dealing with embarrassment by haggling terms with the rude hotel staff
