[Resolved]  Hyundai i20 — Steering & Suspension Noise

Address:Rajasthan

To The Company Authorities & Customer Care, (13th Sep 2010)
I bought the I 20 Asta, 1.4 CRDI E-III (17 digit number: MALBB51SR9M104098) in October 2009. My belief then was that Hyundai was relaible, sturdy & durable which pushed me to cross the 7L mark price for a hatch back, a slightly steep price for a diesel hatch. However, today I am thoroughly disappointed with the product & have lost faith in Hyundai. The product has not delivered even close to the expectation when it comes to durability & reliability. The service standards & the approach of the company authorities towards certain issues which are ‘manufacturing defects’ and have appeared in almost all batches of I 20 , have left me rather disappointed & let down !
0-600 KMS Run:
-The car was a pleasure to drive & the gear shift & clutch was smooth & functioned like the car I test drove before booking one last October.
-The only issue that I started suspecting at this stage was a shaky suspension & a very mild rattle on the steering while driving over bumpy roads & pot holes.
At[protected] KMS RUN:
-The drive & the pickup of the car was as good as it was when new
-However, the front left suspension or the shocker probably started making a loud BANG ‘Katak’ kind of sound if the left side encountered a deepish pot hole or a sudden sharp bump
-The overall suspension felt more bumpy & shakier than before
-The steering rattle noise when driving over bumpy uneven roads had increased considerably & on mentioning the same at first service at Hindustan Hyundai I was told its negligible & will not increase & that I should ignore it.

At[protected] KMS RUN:
-The front left suspension/shocker bang-‘Katak’ sound became a regular feature whenever the left tyre ran into a little pot hole & seemed like a definite manufacturing/design issue
-The steering rattle noise became stronger & more apparent & the vibrations on the steering increased significantly
-The suspension become more shaky & vibrations in the cabin increased considerably

At[protected] KMS RUN:
-The front left suspension issue & noise continued
-The steering noise increased more & had to be looked into at 2nd service & vibrations increased
-The average dropped by 1.5 -2 kms/ltr
-The clutch became much harder than before (& there was no clutch riding as I drive the car on my own)
-The brakes started making a weird uncomfortable noise
-The suspension seemed to have become softer & the vibrations on the slightest of bumps became bigger
-The pick up dropped & the engine noise increased significantly

When I Approached the Service Centre for 2nd service & complaint redressal-Hindustan Hyundai, Jaipur on the 9th Sep 2010:
There was chaos & confusion & there was no one to attend to me in the 1st 15 mins. After 15-20 mins a supervisor approached me & another person drove my car like with utmost rashness with screeching & skidding like he was on a ‘car drifting’ holiday. The manager seemed helpless & casual & I was committed 2 hours time for the service, when I reached at 11 AM.
The mechanic changed the ‘Air Filter’, the ‘Oil Filter’, The engine oil etc & gave me an estimate of Rs. 3600 & then hesitantly asked informed me that it would take long if I wanted to get the steering done, when I said I was willing to wait, he opened up the steering column put some Greece etc & then put a pad etc (a direction given to all dealers by Hyundai). On the test drive at 5PM we realized the noise had increased & the steering had become even harder & had more vibrations than before. When I told the manager about the issue & how this was a defect across cars in India (a reading from online forums/reviews of 50-60 users), Mr. manger casually asked the mechanic to apply more Greece, when I questioned the logic I was told to come again the next day & that the service centre had no further solutions & they would mail the technical team & get back to me.
Today on the 13th Sep 2010 when no one go back to me I called up Mr. Manager & there was no response till late evening when I called up again. He told me to come to the service centre & realized himself that the noise had increased further but had no solution & asked the mechanic to put the car on lift to tighten the screw under the car post which there was no difference in the steering.
Post some hard talk I was given the number for the APSM Mr.Vikrant, who told me that the steering would get replaced but failed to give guarantee of non occurance as the same kind of stering would be put in the car.
The service centre informd me it doesn’t have the parts & also as I read across reviews online, changing the sterring has not solved the problem for innumerable users across India so not sure how a new steering with the same technology & design will help.
The steering problem is left un solved & all other problems mentioned above have still not even been looked into.
I am left thoroughly disappointed with the casual attitude of the company towards such a serious problem in a premium hatch back!
Following are some links from numerous other users who are facing the same issue:

-Pics of the replacemenst etc across the dealerships are attached to the mail for your reference

Leaves me with ONLY one option- TO LODGE A COMPLAINT IN THE CONSUMER COMPLAINT FORUM on rounds of inconvenience & an inferior offering which does not meet the committed standards of sercive & product elivery!!
All good companys-HONDA/TOYOTA etc have called back cars with such manufacturing issues !
Please help & assist with a reasonable & permanent solution if some sensitive /responsible Hyundai person is reading this !!

Dear Mr. Akshay,

I'm also owner of I20 since Sept. 2010, I do agree with your complaints, as the similar problem I'm facing from the day of purchase, if the informality of problem is their amongst the all customers then Hyundai has to provide us the best and proper solution otherwise they have to call back all the defective I20 cars and replace. I think Mr. Akshay, Hyundai has to take some serious action against it otherwise we have to think for some serious action against Hyundai. I think we have to give one more chance to Hyundai to resolve the problem and if it will remain unsolved then we have to initiate some strong legal action against it.

Hi,
I bought a i20 in July and have a suspension issue in my car.
It makes a lot of noise when it hits potholes
Have complained for the same to Modi Hyundai who worked on the car, but the problem has now increased, now it makes even more noise.

Also, the steering is too stiff compared to other i20 cars.

I want to file a case against them.. would require advice

Hi Akshay/ Guneet,

I agree with you too... its been a month since i bought I20 Sportz CRDI, even i face the same issue from the front left suspension. A big "thad" noise flows through the cabin on the sharp bumy roads. The only solution for this is we all should get together and raise this issue with Hyundai guys... need to bring in media hype here or else we will not be able to resolve this issue.

Please note my details - am Gururaj Rao from Bangalore, note my number: +[protected].

Let every gather in a forum and raise this issue.

Please let me know your views.

Hi Friends,

Thanks for your information shared, I too have a steering issue and yet the problem remains even after plenty of reworks done by KUN Hyundai Ambattur branch. Really they are fit for nothing, but they can give a big explanation for the problem and the ______ manager can cooly tell this is not a issue. We guys have inversted 6 to 7 L of our money on a faliure product which is not even worth for 1rupee car. Hyundai has not even replied for the mails which i have sent, a poor couster service, Instud of this they can close the plant or they should stop selling the product till they solve this issue.

How many of you got your replies from Hyundai Motors?

Regards
Krishnamoorthy.

I have travelled 1400 kms i20 diesel magna(o) bought just 20 days before. There is noise when I turn the steering like tick tick, even car is standing. Told to service foreman he tightened the steering wheel which became more hard and heavier and noise still persisted. Bad experience with Hyundai . A big mistake by me to buy a Hyundai car... Fiat is much better than them. I m missing my fiat Palio ..
hi,
I also agree with all of you above I bought my car in august 2009 for initial two years there was no problem but after two years all problem started as everyone said i also experienced left suspension to be noisy in smallest of potholes i was cursing bmc for so many days for bad roads but even on small speed breakers this noise would come i went to hyundai service centre they told me to replace my suspension and started giving me all the prices so i visited a normal mechanic and showed him he said my suspension is good and he has also heard many complaints from this car so this service centre guys have least knowledge about the car and they only know to charge extra and earn money for a part which is not faulty and also my average has gone down significantly and engine vibration have increased i am feeling as if i am driving bmws or merc because i am also getting the average of 8-9kmpl but then i tell myself no i am driving this bad car which makes noise of big KATAK once she goes into small pothole or speed breaker...

Dear Friends,

First of all I appreciate the effort of you people to address this issue and I offer you all my support and help in finding a solution to this problem.

My i20 car is having the same steering rattling issue.I am fed up with the procedure of approaching the dealership with this complaint and again returning to them with the same complaint after running less than 100 kilometers. The Service Department in the Dealerships are just making fun of their customers by stating that these are common to vehicles having Electronic Power Steering and they are also blaming our roads for creating such issues which is actually a manufacturing defect.

I am thoroughly disappointed with the product & have lost faith in Hyundai. The service standards and the approach of the company authorities towards certain issues which are manufacturing defects are very disappointing.I think it is better to gather more people who are facing the same issue and then proceed legally.

while the steering issues in my i20 were solved after three years of struggle and after a case was filed against Hyundai and its local dealership in the consumer court, it is clear that many are still facing the issue.

Hyundai directed to refund consumer for faulty steering wheel and Poor mileage
BY TEAM B&C PANAJI: Car manufacturer Hyundai has been directed by a local consumer forum to refund a sum of Rs 5, 03, 062 as compensation to a customer for selling a car with a defective steering wheel. In a complaint filed at the South Goa District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, the complainant, CIJONI MATILDA DIAS from Margao, in February 2012, stated that at the time of purchase the car was running well. However, within 10 days, the steering wheel developed problems and was not rotating properly, to the extent that when the wheel turned either to the right of left while driving it remained in the said position and did not freely return back to its normal position, that is, straight position. Rotating the wheel was difficult even though it had power steering.

Also, she proved by way of a mileage test conducted by Hyundai that the car only gave a mileage of 12 kms per litre which was far less than the company's claims of 21 kms per litre

According to her, despite repeated complaints by the complainant to the car dealer, the steering wheel was not replaced nor was the mileage problem rectified. In order to secure her safety, the complainant took the car to an independent service station to allay her fears and also took the opinion of mechanical engineers, both of whom opined that the steering wheel had a manufacturing defect and that it was dangerous which could lead to an accident. The respondents (both the car company and the dealer) in their replies disputed the complaint and contended that there was no defect in the car after it was inspected during the first free service. They also denied any deficiency in service on their part. The forum, relying upon the documents and other material placed before it, observed that the company failed to deliver a vehicle free from any defects which is their bounden duty, and directed Hyundai to refund a sum of Rs 5, 03, 062 along with interest at 9 per cent per annum from the date the car was purchased. It directed the complainant to hand over the vehicle upon refund. The forum also directed that company to pay an additional sum of Rs 25, 000 to the complainant towards mental pain and suffering.

I bought a brand new Hyundai i20 in August 2011 as a driving school car after Hyundai promoted these vehicles to the Southern African Institute of Driving Instructors. I experienced so many problems with the vehicle that Hyundai offered me a refund, excluding depreciation, minus usage in June 2012 after I travelled 23000 km.
Hyundai were very keen to promote their vehicles to the South African market, especially driving schools so that learner drivers would also buy the cars they had been trained on. When I met with a manufacturer of dual control kits, they sent two representatives to the private meeting uninvited. After I fitted the kit to my Hyundai i20, they constantly referred people to me for referrals (at no commission to me of course!).

Firstly the car started off very well, but only for 3 months then the steering started to make a very loud noise necessitating a day's cancelled work repeatedly until I was told it was a factory recall and that the whole steering rack had to be ordered from Korea. Well we struggled on with loud creaks for 11 weeks until the part arrived. Another day's work was cancelled. It was the wrong part! 11 weeks later a second steering rack arrived in South Africa and a day's work was cancelled. Guess what? It was the wrong part for the second time! Another long delay was experienced while I was extremely embarrassed at the terrible noise the new car was making, on lesson after lesson. Once the new steering rack was fitted the noise stopped completely.

My problems with the Hyundai i20 were not over yet. The air-conditioner had worked like a dream for a few months then suddenly it started blowing our boiling hot air in the heat of a boiling Summer. It was a security risk because we had to do driving lessons with all the windows wide open and vendors pushing their heads into the car at traffic signals. I was advised that a hole had been made in the air conditioning system during manufacture. It took many weeks for the problem to be fixed while a part was sent out from Korea again. I think it was the wrong part again and a second wait occurred for just as long. It was eventually fixed.

In the meantime, every driving lesson was a disaster in the car after a few months. The electronic power steering became so stiff that it was totally impossible to continue every two-hour driving lesson after only 30 minutes when training students to park, do three-point turns and reversing.

We were advised by Hyundai and others to leave the practise area and take it for a short spin to loosen the steering wheel up then to continue because it was overheating, but after doing that, only one more attempt at parking was possible before the steering became impossible to continue. It was not that it reverted to manual steering because I was very used to training drivers in a Toyota Tazz for many years without any difficulty with manual steering. It was far, far tighter than that!.

Then one stop light started going off then coming on at any time. I took it back to the dealership at Hyundai Menlyn, Pretoria only to discover that they simply changed the globes and told me to fetch the vehicle after cancelling a whole day's work again to get the electrics repaired. I was furious! Pupils would be failed if the car was not roadworthy and Hyundai treated me like a stupid ignorant woman.

I kept writing emails to Hyundai about each problem, but I was no longer able to use this vehicle for driver training purposes for which it had been bought. I think it would have been okay as a private car.

I received an email from Hyundai Head Office from a very concerned Customer Complaints lady offering a refund, minus usage, with no depreciation. I had bought it at R185 227.00 on 29 August 2011. They offered me a refund of R139, 656.26! Guess what? She no longer works there!!! I wonder why?

I tried turning to the National Consumer Commissioner who did exactly nothing to assist me from then until now, simply forwarding my emails to Hyundai and nothing else.

I tried the Public Protector who agreed that the NCC was useless and that it was their job to fix up the mess there so "sorry if you fell through the cracks, but we can't help you. We have thousands of cases waiting for our attention."

I tried the Motor Ombudsman who did not even bother to answer me.

I tried Consumer Complaints. They let the matter drag on for many months from 2013 to 2014.

I tried a lawyer but that did not help. I was even offered a deal by another lawyer to represent me in exchange for driving lessons for her boyfriend but I had to have written proof of all the times I went to Hyundai Menlyn for help and cancelled work..

I had unfortunately thrown most of the papers away of when I took the car in for constant attention. I trusted Hyundai to give me a full record. When I asked Hyundai for a service record on my 5-year maintenance plan, which I had seen was as long as a toilet roll, they emailed me two items only.

In the meantime I bought a brand-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class CDI diesel 180 turbo charged car which is a dream driving school car, without any similar problems.

I have had to struggle to pay both cars now for almost two years at R3784 per month for the Hyundai. I cannot win because the book value of the car has dropped too.I eventually was forced to accept the terms Hyundai offered me in June 2012, but I calculate according to the AA rate for usage, that they owe me R157 000. They have asked the Motor Ombudsman on Friday 4th April 2014 for the usage rate. Believe me they are ducking and diving doing their best to avoid paying me a fair amount. I am waiting to see if he answers them and just how little the two of them plan to refund me.

I would warm anybody against buying a Hyundai based on my experience.
Even I am facing the same issue how to resolve that
Hai,

I have also faced the problem of steering tight. When i approached chandra Hyundai, Coimbatore, they informed that the steering need to be changed. I have drove only 8500 Km till date. Really it is a worst expereince i had in this product. No response from the [protected]@hmil.net.
If anybody have any solutionfor this please share to [protected]@gmail.com
