I am the customer of axis bank since 4 years now. Last year when the rbi made it mandatory that chip-based debit card are to be used by all, the bank issued me a new debit card. As the new card was issued to me, i discarded my old debit card, thinking the same cannot be used now and the same is true also. However now they have charged me annual debit card charges for both the cards. On confrontation, the bank official said that your old card was also active throughout and now it has been blocked. He also advised me to claim refund through phone banking. When i called the bank, they shamelessly refused to reverse the disputed debit card charges. The lady said you should have made proper enquiries and blocked the card earlier only. It was default on your part. Note that i had never asked the bank to issue me a new chip-based card. It had issued the same on its own citing rbi regulations. But on the other hand, even when rbi regulations do not allow non-chip based cards, it charged me for the same. It seems bank followed rbi regulations as per its convenience. Also, the whole episode points to the bank's attitude that it can issue whatever card or service to the customer on its own and without any request, and charge the customer later for the same.
