I am out of India from 31st January, 2015. I am visiting KENYA on a business trip. On 30th Jan, I contacted Vodafone Customer Care to check for International Roaming charges applicable for Kenya and also to check if any promo pack is available to bring down the call rates. The lady on the other side informed that normal call rates would be as follows:
Rs.70/min for calling any local Kenyan number
Rs.165/min for calling any Indian number
Rs.70/min for any incoming call
HOWEVER, if I activate a promo of Rs.599 with 10 days validity(IROAM599_10), the call rates will come down to:
Rs.15/min for calling any local Kenyan number
Rs.30/min for calling any Indian number
Rs.15/min for any incoming call
So, I went ahead and activated the promo and the service became active from 31st Jan, 12 am onward...
Now, on 31st when I was travelling to Kenya, I had to wait for some time at Dubai airport for my connecting flight and I made/received a few calls to/from India.
While I was waiting in Dubai, I also received a call from another Vodafone representative (from no. : [protected]) who also confirmed that the same DISCOUNTED call rates will be applicable in Kenya mentioned above.
But, now that I got my itemized bill in hand, I can see that only the calls I made in Dubai are at discounted rates whereas all the calls that I made or received in Kenya are charged at the normal high rates..
This is a serious miss-commitment on part of Vodafone as two of the representatives confirmed the same thing and made me subscribe for a promo that came of no use. Had I been informed that promo will not work in Kenya, I could have easily opted for an alternative (local number or skype) rather than using my Indian number here. Now, I have been handed a huge bill amount by Vodafone because two of their employees either lied to me or are not aware of their own services!!!
Moreover, as Vodafone was charging me at normal rates, my credit limit (Rs.5000) exceeded soon and I started receiving frequent calls (4-5 calls daily) from Customer Care, but no matter how many times I picked up the call, not a single person responded at the other end, but Vodafone did not miss charging me Rs.70/min for these incomming ghost calls even…AMAZING!!!
Then I tried to contact Customer Care through 111 but was not able to as Safaricom (Vodafone partner in Kenya) kept saying the number is not valid.
As a last measure, I tried contacting Chat Support through the website and after much effort once I got connected to an agent, he bluntly said that the discount will be visible only after the bill is generated and kicked me off the chat….GREAT SUPPORT!!!
Ultimately, Vodafone discontinued my service on account of, I guess, “High Outstanding Unbilled Amount ” even before the expiry of the promo pack which was 9th Feb.
I was left without any form of communication in a foreign country in middle of a business trip due to a reason I am not responsible for…
