Hi manasmithun,
I am sorry to hear about your case, however I’d try to help you in the best possible way.
1. I’d like to check with you, did you register the hard drive on the WD website when you purchded?
You can check the warranty of the hard drive on our website by the serial number. I’d post the link below:
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=1DGPY
2. How sure you are that the drive has crashed? Did you check the drive after connecting to another PC?
3.Try to connect the drive using another USB cable sometimes the cable can go bad.
4. Also check if the drive is getting enough power to spin up, are you able to see any power light on the drive after connecting.
5. WD is not responsible for any data lost as we don’t cover that in our warranty.
You can send the drive for RMA if it’s under warranty. But before sending the drive for RMA try the basic troubleshooting steps to see if it’s the hard drive failure.
For RMA you can refer to the link below:
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Ge5b2S
Hope it helps.
I checked with different cable and also in another pc, but it is not reading the data ...and also it is under warranty ...plz tell me the address where i have to send.
Hi manasmithun,

I am sorry to hear about it, for RMA you can refer to the link below:

http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Ge5b2S

Visit the link and key in your details once you are done with that, you will get a notification message from WD.

One more thing just to inform you that you are not required to send it anywhere. Once, you will initiate the RMA from the link given above, WD will send it's courier service to pick it up from you.

Hope it helps.

Hello, I have a 2Tb WD My Book external hard drive that stopped working after a file transfer to an internal HD was suddenly stopped. No PC was able to recognise it after the problem, so I took the hard drive out of the case and tried to install it on my machine, but despite appearing on the BIOS, it does not show the size and the machine does not start anymore. Would anyone please be able to help? Thank you!

    Hi chintu s,
Sorry to hear about that, by opening the WD My Book external hard drive case, you have already voided the warranty.
When installation of a hard disk results in a system crash. It is normally a sign of failed drive electronics. Now If you can swap the circuit board from an identical (and I do mean absolute identical model) drive you may be able to salvage the data.

    Good Luck

        HI chapke,

May I know since when you are facing the issue?

What exact error message do you get while connecting?

Have you tried to connect using another cable and different ports on your PC?

If possible, try to connect to another system.

I'd suggest you to run the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics to test the drive.

        http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Xhr59y

After running this software do update what's the result.

        Hope it helps.

              Hi kaur B,
Online backup is a strategy for backing up data that involves sending a copy of the data over a proprietary or network to an off-site server. Which helps you to protect your data in case of any loss or damage to the hard drive.
              Hope it helps.

Western Digital customer support has been notified about the posted complaint.
                Hi gurpreet93651,

Based on your post, if you are planning to buy a Western Digital hard drive, the best thing about it is that you are not required to worry about warranties. You can simply register your hard drive on the website for warranty. Once you feel that the hard drive is creating problems, you may initiate the replacement process from the website only. For more details you may visit the link below:

                http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=o2Me6C

                Hope it helps.
Thanks for the useful information. And after purchasing and registering it online, it gets some errors or bad sectors, while it is in warranty period, where will i send it for replacement? to online shopping site?
                Hi gurpreet93651,

Thanks for replying, in case the drive you bought is faulty, straight away at the time of opening and connecting to your PC, you may check with the shopping website as well sometimes they do have a policy to replace the drives in certain time limits. If that doesn't work, then you may claim the warranty as I have mentioned in my previous post. Here's the link for more details.

                http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=o2Me6C

                Hope it helps.
Thanks for help. And how much is the warranty of hdd after registering it with western digital?
                Hi gurpreet93651,

It depends on your choice because there is a variety of drives available from WD. The warranty is different for different lines of products. I'll post a link below from where you may choose the one you like and see the specs and the warranty on the same drive.

                http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=RLILoz

                Hope it helps.
Thanks., I bought wd my passport ulta 1tb portable external hard drive..Please tell me how can i make this hdd password protected?
                Hi gurpreet93651,

We have a software called WD Security utility which can help you to make it password protected.
WD Security utility allows you to set password protection and hardware encryption for your drive to help keep your data private.
I'll post the link below to set up and use it:

                http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=jiFCIV

                Hope it helps.
Thank u very much for ur help.Thats so kind o[censored]...How can i make the backup of my internal drive online and how much data can be copied?
                Hi gurpreet93651,

I am glad to know that I was able to help, for online back up there are two ways to do that.

One is that you may go for WD My Cloud, which will ensure you that your data is safe at your own server and you can access it anywhere you want. For more details you may refer to the link below:

                http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=LdCYrh

Secondary way is that you may create your account on Google drive or One drive and save your files there and can access from wherever you want.

                Hope it helps.
Please tell me some tips for maintenance of my hdd in good condition.
                Hi gurpreet93651,
Here's few tips to maintan healthy hard drive.
                1) Store Your External Hard Drive Flat
If you own a magnetic external hard drive then these hard drives are typically built to lie flat. You should not tilt it up on its side because it has fast spinning platters and a magnetic needle inside, much like a record player.

The way the magnetic external hard drive is designed, the needle moves in millionths of an inch towards the platter but never actually makes contact with it. This extreme precision is based on the fact that your external hard drive should be lying flat.

If your external hard drive is not lying flat then the needle can possibly get too close or too far away from the platter. This can slow down your external hard drives read speed and performance.
                2) External Hard Drive Cables Maintenance
There are a few things that you can do with the cables to your external hard drive. One thing is to make sure that they are secure and not loose with the connections. This can cause the external hard drive to connect and then disconnect from the computer without you knowing. This means that it might disconnect in the middle of file transfer which is not good for any hard drive.

Another way to improve performance on your external hard drive is to have shorter cables. This means that the data transfers faster. Long cables are great and handy but short cables are efficient and fast.
                Hope it helps.
My new hdd is working fine and delivering best performance but when i connect it to my apple laptop, it dosent get recognized??
                Hi gurpreet93651,

Based on your post, may I know what is the file format you are using on the drive?
If it's NTFS MAC will not support, so you need to format it in FAT32 or exFAT in order to use it for both the OS.
Plug the hard drive into your Windows PC. Open the Start menu and search for Disk Management. Select the search result and the Disk Management utility will launch. In the left sidebar, you should see your hard drive and its partitions. Right-click the Windows partition and select Format. In the Format dialog box, under File System, select FAT32. Click OK and complete the format process.
I am posting a link below for the guidelines to format the drive:
                http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=cYQGgX

Note: make sure you have all the back up before making any changes to the drive.

                Hope it will help.

Hi. I am unable to detect my external hdd when i connect it to my laptop. I can not see in device management also. What to do to access it?

                hdd making clicking sounds

My wd passport 500gb is making clicking sounds repeatedly. I can access it as usual. But the clicking sounds are making me worried. Is it due to some virus activity??

                  Hi sharon awasthi,

I hope you are doing well, have you performed any test on the drive to check if the hard drive is faulty? You may test the drive on another PC before sending it for RMA.

I'd recommend you to run Data Lifeguard Diagnostics and see what is the result.

Based on your post, I am pasting a link below which shows exactly the same issue as yours and the cause for the same. It has the detailed description on how you can resolve the issue:

                      Hope it helps.
Thanks for the useful information. The software mentioned in the the link, DLG, is meant only for wd drives or can be used on other drives also.Actually i checked my samsung internal hdd with it, and it showed the results also. Is it ok to use it for other drives also, or it can cause some problems for other hdd's due to compatibility issues?
                      Hi rahul vishwas,

Thanks for your reply, the DLG is built to test any brand's hard drive as long as you are using it on a Windows PC. It will not have any bad impact on the hard drive. This software can further improve the performance of the drive. So there is no harm to use it for any other brand's hard drive.

                      Hope it helps.
Thanks for your kind help. The software DLG has proven very useful for me. Is there any software for making my hdd password protected?

                          Hi sumit45,

You may download drivers for WD products from the link below:

                          http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=fngmMA

For maintenance keep the hard drive in a safe place.

                          It should not fall down.

It should not be pressed with heavy weight.

Clean the stuff which you are not using or you don't need.

To check the bad sectors on HDD, you may run the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics.

                          Hi sumit45,

This software meant to test all drives, you may use it to test other drives. But make sure you use it on Windows as it will not support the MAC OS.

                          Hope it helps.

                          Hi sumit45,

The WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics works with all the drives if you are using Windows.

Due to limitations in Mac OSX, the drive will need to be connected to a PC running Windows in order to run our diagnostics.

                            Hi s.abhijt,
Most of the times, you need to format the drive before you can use it for data. You may follow the steps below:
                            1) Right-Click on the My Computer icon either on your desktop or in the Start Menu and select Manage.
A new window titled Computer Management comes up.
                            2) Select Storage from the left hand side by clicking it once, then select Disk Management(local) from the right side by double-clicking it. Find your new drive and format it with one large partition.
                            3) For First partition -make a primary partition if you want only one partition on the hard drive.
                            4) Then you format the partition - again right click and select format use NTSF - use default allocation size and give the new volume a label (no spaces allowed in the name).
                            Hope it helps

                              Hi akash329,

Any new Windows OS which you're going to install/upgrade might erase all your data on your hard drive, even though you've created particular partitions on it. I'd suggest you to backup all of your data first, before you make any OS upgrade to your PC. You may create those partitions again after installing the new OS.

Note: After you have backed up all your data, you may go ahead to perform full erase or format the drive because of the Operating System and BIOS limitations.

                              Hope it helps.

                                    Hi vishal88,
I hope you are doing well. Based on your post you may try the following basic troubleshooting steps.
                                    1) Have you tried to connect the using different port available on your PC? You may try to connect the drive through another port if you have not tried.
                                    2) Try to connect using another USB cable, sometimes the cable might be failing or not supplying enough power to the drive.
                                    3) You may try to connect the hard drive to another system to check the hard drive is working or not?
                                    4) Are you able to use other external drives without any issues?
Try to check in device manager with the following steps.
From the start menu right click on the Computer and choose Manage. This will bring up the Computer Management Window. Now you can see Device manager on the left hand side under the heading System Tools.
In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along, the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed. Right click on the "Uninstall" and click "OK". Then try to reconnect the drive it should show up.
If it doesn't appear in Device Manager then you could try checking in Disk Management. Check if it appears there, sometimes it may turn up as Disk 1 or Disk 2, and the status. You could try to initialize and format it from here.

                                        Hi vivek4844,
I'd like to help you, based on your did you try to check the same partition in disk management? You may follow the steps below to resolve the issue.

                                        1) Check if that partition exists in the "Disk Management"
                                        1. From the Desktop, bring the mouse to the lower left-hand corner of the screen. This will bring up a small Start menu preview screen.
                                        2. Right click with the mouse, and a list if options will appear.
                                        3. From this list, click on Disk Management, which will launch the window on the desktop
                                        2) If you notice a partition without a drive letter, then right click on it
                                        1. Select "Change Drive Letter and Paths"
                                        2. Click on add button and select a drive letter
                                        3. Click ok and you should be able to view your data on this partition.
                                        Good luck
                                        Lincon_ WD.
