I bought a new pc. All components are new, but i am using a old wd hard disk which i have taken from my old pc as secondary hard drive. This wd hdd was working fine with my old pc. The boot menu and disk management shows that the secondary HDD is there, but it does not show up in My Computer.

Hi arsh854,
I hope you are doing well. Based on your post you may try to assign a drive letter to the drive as you can see it in disk management. You may follow the below steps to change, add, or remove a drive letter.
1. Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. In the left pane, click Disk Management.
3. Right-click the drive that you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
4. Do one of the following:
Option 1. To assign a drive letter if one has not already been assigned, click Add, click the letter that you want to use, and then click OK.
Option 2. To change a drive letter, click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the letter that you want to use, and then click OK.
Option 3. To remove a drive letter, click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to remove it.
Hope it helps.
Thanks for the help..I have got this new pc as assembled pc from market. So what is the warranty of hdd and how to check that. Like vendor has given warranty for 1 year and after that for the products like hdd and processor, i have to take warrant directly from the company..
Hi arsh854,

May I know what is the name of the hard drive manufacturer? Normally you can check the warranty online from the website of the company. It depends on the model of hard drive that how long will be the warranty.

Hope it helps.

    Hi satveer54,
    Based on your post, I'd suggest you to remove the drive from the USB hub and directly connect it to your computer because many hubs leave the data ports active indefinitely and that lead the drive to be on even when you shut down the PC.

    I have found a relevant article which explains more about the similar issue. You may visit the link below and click on "The WD My Book external hard drive does not power down automatically when the computer system shuts down"

      I am having problem with my hard drive. I have one internal 500 gb seagate hdd which was already installed on my PC and is running ok. I just bought a new wd 500 gb wd hdd which i connected to my pc as slave, but its neither showing up in BIOS nor in disk management. Althogh i can hear a spinning sound from it when i turn on my Pc. i am running windows 7 on my pc. Any suggestions?

      Hi jiya662,
      I hope you are doing well. The BIOS will not detect a hard disk if the data cable is damaged or the connection is incorrect.
      You may try the following troubleshooting steps.
      1) Check the connections on the SATA ports, make sure the drive is connected properly.
      2) Try to connect the drive using another port.
      3) Try to connect the drive with different SATA cables. Sometimes bad cables can cause this.
      4) Try to check the power cables, make sure the drive is getting enough power to spin up.
      5) Try to connect the hard drive to another system to see if it's being recognized there.
      Hope it helps.

        Hello! I have PC with amd sempron processor and western digital 500gb hdd. After using the pc i switched off it directly from power supply. When i started it again, it started giving message that no bootable device found. Insert boot disk and press enter. What should i do now??

        Hi sahilarora862,
        I hope you are doing well. Based on your post did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?
        It seems like the computer is no longer recognizing that there is a hard drive in the system. You might try checking the BIOS to see if the disk is detected there, and verify that the boot order includes the hard disk, and that it is before other items in the boot order list. But it would be extremely odd for this setting to change on its own.

          Hi jaggy48,
          I hope you are doing well. Based on your post there might be a few reasons why it's not detected in your PC.
          1) Check all the connections properly, sometimes loose connections can cause this.
          2) Try to replace the cable sometimes the cables can be failing or not supportive.

          I have found an article from the WD website which looks useful and similar to your issue. You may visit the link below for more detailed description.

Pc somehow manages to boot but when i see in computer management there also its not detected. when i remove my old hard disk and only connect my new hard disk then also it's not detected. Problem must be in Computer managment. there is a disk, there was written "unallocated". can I acess my hard disk agian without formating!?

                  Hi gurpreet66,
                  I'd like to help you based on your post, you may try to create a new partition on the drive where it shows "unallocated". Now the drive is in Unformated state which means there is no file format on the drive. You may try to right click on the disk where it shows unallocated and from there you can create a new partition on the drive. If the data is not there you may try to run the data recovery software to recover the data as you have done before. I'd also suggest you not to copy paste any data on the drive because this will overwrite and it will be hard to recover the data even for the data recovery softwares.If you want to use the drive on your TV you may have to check the compatibility on the TV and format it in the supporting file format which can be FAT32 Or NTFS.

                  I'd also suggest to take backup of important data in future.

                  I hope it will help you.

                    Hi Baldev,

                    I am sorry to hear about it. I’d like to check with you, I have checked Western Digital Hard Disk 500GB Serial number: WCA5C65666, unfortunately it’s not able to find in WD Warranty site. It may be a typo error, because WD serial number contained 12 digits. Besides that, you may visit our website to check the HDD status. Please refer the link below to warranty check.

                    http://wdsupport.wdc.com/warranty/warrantycheck.asp?custtype=end .

                    For the WD Green HDD, I have checked but it’s no longer under warranty. Please advise if you have created the RMA or have you refer to the reseller that the HDD you bought from.

                    If you have created the RMA request, you can check the status at: https://westerndigital.secure.force.com/ind/?lang=en .

                    I am sorry to hear about it. Based on your post, it may be a hardware issue. I’d like to check with you, after connected the WD My Passport HDD, is the LED light blinking? If possible, please provide a snapshot and the specific error message.

                    For the meantime, you may try to run DLG, to check if there is any issue with HDD.

                    HI WD,

                    I got issue again, I have a purple drive and its not working properly. I used your software and its showing the badstatus of drive. The error msg is reallocated sector conut attribute has failed.

                    what to do?
                    Hi amit423,

                    SO first thing's first, please backup your existing data in other storage space. After backup the drive, try to format the drive in full format option. It will take a bit more time as compared to the quick format option. The reason to advise the full format option because it will write the zeros on each sectors table and it might help to remove the electrical errors.
                    After the format, try to run the utility software; if the reallocated sectors, pending sector and the threshold value is more than 50% then please proceed for an RMA option.

                      Hi micky.m,

                      The error you are facing is may be because of some bad sectors on the drive.
                      My suggestion to you is that you may follow the below instructions to resolve it.
                      Click on Start --> Run --> Type cmd and press Enter.
                      "Command Prompt" will be opened.

                      Since you are having problem with G & H drivers, enter the below command

                      Chkdsk /f g: --> Press Enter.
                      chkdsk /f h: --> Press Enter.
                      second option is that you can also run the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics to confirm if there is any hardware damage.
                      http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/940
                      This test will also replace some of the bad sectors with the reserved sectors on the drive that will help to recover the drive from any bad sectors.
                      I hope it will resolve your issue.
                      Good Luck
                      Please tell me one more thing that can i change the drive letters that are assigned by default to partitions??
                      Hi micky.m,

                      You may change the drive letters with the help of guidelines given on the link below:

                      http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=X94JNg

                      You may choose your operating system and then follow the instructions.

                      Hope it helps.

                        I am sorry to hear about your issue, based on your post I would like to know whether it's appearing in Device Manager or not?
                        I'd suggest you to reinstall your HDD's drivers from the Device Manager.
                        You may also try to update the firmware of your drive from WD using the below link.

                        You may also try to use another USB cable to connect.
                        You may also try to run the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics from WD to test the drive for problems.

                        How to check the warranty of hdd. Is it from the date of billing?
                        Hi jack7959,

                        I am glad to hear that the issue is resolved. For warranty, it depends if you have registered the drive with WD on the website or not. If you have, then the warranty will start from the date of registration. But if you didn't register at the time of purchase then you have to provide the bill or receipt of purchase to WD for the warranty registration. The best way to this would be to call the customer care line.

                        Hi lincon_wd... The software "Data Lifeguard" that u had mentioned in ur post will work on other hdd's also or only for wd hard drives. Actually i have 1 more hdd of hitachi..and its running very slow form few days. I want to check it for errors but i am worried if i run data life guard for it, my data doesnt get affected or erased.
                        Hi jack7959,

                        I hope you are doing good, the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics cab be used for other drives. It will not erase any data on the drive.

                        Also try to increase free space in the hdd by deleting some files you don't use. It will help you to increase the life of HDD and you may get the better transfer speed.

                        Hope it helps.

                          Hi Chintu,

                          I am glad to help you out. I’d suggest you to go with WD Red. WD Red designed for Enterprise use and recommended for RAID and NAS setup. The WD Red is design to just spin constantly for continual use/availability. For you information, WD Green also use for RAID setup. The WD Green drives do keep very cool since they use little power and are also very quiet. For RAID setup, the specification for WD hard drives must be same else you will face the problem to set up RAID.

                          For Raid 0 and RAID 1 setup, Please refer below link.

                            Western Digital Customer Care's response
                            Hi Ssaria,

                            I am glad to help you out Based on your post, it may be a System issue. I’d like to check with you, have you had any success plugging in other USB devices to the same computer? Have you checked Properties of HDD? Does it show the memory space? Could you give me some more details about that? For the meantime, I suggest you some basic troubleshooting steps that may help you to solve the issue.

                            1) To check if it's hardware or software issue.
                            2) Try to connect with different USB ports with the same computer.
                            3) Change the USB cable (USB 3.0).
                            4) Try a different disk to make sure that the problem is with the computer and not with the original disk.
                            5) Try to connect with another USB 3.0 device to test on the port, just to make sure its a driver issue.
                            6) Check and update drivers in device manager.

                            Try to connect HDD with another working computer and run the Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics in system.

                              I have a WD My Passport 0740 500GB external HD that stopped working just 2-3 months after I started using it. And it filled to the brim, too. I tried taking it to the local IT store to recover the data, but no luck. ( PS, they opened the casing, so warranty is void).The light on the HD turns on. The Hard Drive is recognized. But it does not show up on Windows Explorer (windows 7 Ultimate). I've read a number of forum posts regarding the issue and checked that: a) the HD does not show up in that BIOS. b) when I open disk management, the HD does show up as disk1, but with no bar. At this point i've given up on recovering the data. But if the HD proves salvagable in any way, I'd be gratefull.

                                My WD My Passport 1TB stopped working all of a sudden. I just got it 3 months ago. The computer recognizes the hard drive and when I went to Disk Management the file system says RAW. The light just keeps on blinking. I've been looking for solutions online and I got answers that said that I should try making a new partition. I deleted the old and made a new one and now I'm formatting it and it seems to be stuck. I think there should be progress shown somewhere but mine just says "Formatting". I didn't do a quick format by the way. Should I just cancel the format or do I have to wait because I started 5 hours ago and nothing's happened. And the light is not blinking anymore now but the computer still detects the hd. What does that mean? I don't really care about the data anymore. I just want my hd to work again...

                                Hi Thakurv459,
                                I am glad to help you out. Based on your post, it may be a hardware issue. For your information, there might be a bad sector in the HDD; due to that its stuck during format. I’d suggest you, just cancel the format and unplug the HDD. After that plugin and reformat the HDD with quick format option. If you are unable to do format, I give you some more basic steps that may help you to solve the issue.

                                1) Go into Disk Management and in the bottom-right panel look for a ribbon which labelled as RAW and has no drive name.
                                2) For Assign the letter, right-click on that & choose Change Drive Letters and Paths.
                                3) Click Add and accept the default letter or choose preferred letter from list.
                                4) Click OK.

                                If possible, try to connect WD My Passport with another working computer and run the Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics in system. Please refer to the link below for Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics:

                                  I have a 2Tb WD My Book external hard drive that stopped working after a file transfer to an internal HD was suddenly stopped. No PC was able to recognise it after the problem, so I took the hard drive out of the case and tried to install it on my machine, but despite appearing on the BIOS, it does not show the size and the machine does not start anymore.

                                  Hi Chapke,
                                  I am sorry to hear about it. Based on your post, it may be a hardware issue. I’d like to check with you, you mentioned that HDD installed in PC; its as primary or secondary drive? If as primary, did you try to install OS on it? During the data transfer, is there any LED light blinking on WD My Book? Could you give me some more details about that? Give snapshot or the specific error message, When you are installing the HDD. For the meantime, I suggest you some basic troubleshooting steps that may help you to solve the issue.

                                  1) Make sure the power is turn on.
                                  2) Try to connect with different USB ports with the same computer.
                                  3) Change the USB cable (USB 3.0).
                                  4) Try to connect with other computer.

                                    Hi Avinu,

                                    I am glad to help you out. For your information, the terabyte is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information. The following formula will help
                                    you for better understanding.

                                    1.0TB =[protected] bytes = 1000 gigabytes.

                                    2.0TB =[protected] bytes = 2000 gigabytes.

                                    For example, you have 1.02TB in HDD.

                                    1.02TB =[protected] bytes = 1020 gigabytes.

                                    0.02TB = [protected] bytes = 20 gigabytes.

                                    That means 0.02TB still represents 20GB in HDD so put something larger than 10GB and you should see an decrease of 0.01TB. After transfer, you will see the difference from 1.02TB to 1.01TB.

                                    Hope it helps.

                                    2.0TB =[protected] bytes = 2000 gigabytes.
                                    For example, you have 1.02TB in HDD.
                                    1.02TB =[protected] bytes = 1020 gigabytes.
                                    0.02TB = [protected] bytes = 20 gigabytes.

                                    That means 0.02TB still represents 20GB in HDD so put something larger than 10GB and you should see an decrease of 0.01TB. After transfer, you will see the difference from 1.02TB to 1.01TB.

                                    Hope it helps.

                                      I have a Western Digital USB Hard Drive and for some reason when I plug it in it doesn't show up on the Windows Disk Management, it just makes a wired noise and then stops making that noise. I don't think the disk is spinning, I've taken some pictures and recorded a video so you guys can see it. If you have any idea of what could be the problem please let me know.
