I received my first-ever credit card from HDFC Bank four days ago with a limit of ₹110, 000. Yesterday, I received a call from someone claiming to be from HDFC Bank, asking to activate the card. Thinking it was a legitimate bank process, I followed the instructions provided, which included dialing a code (401) and a phone number. However, I later discovered that my phone was on call forwarding, preventing me from receiving calls. Upon informing my brother, we realized that fraudulent transactions totaling ₹106, 269 had occurred. There were no OTPs or transaction notifications in my inbox, and I hadn’t used the card online. It appears that personal information, including the fact that I recently received the card and partial card details like first and last four digits of card and expiry of card, was leaked to the fraudsters. It’s concerning that this information was known to them and that I didn’t receive any SMS notifications from the bank. It suggests potential involvement of individuals within the bank in facilitating the fraud.
